What do you think?

So it wouldn't kill me to lose a few pounds. This blog is never ever going to be called skinny girl running, but you know what I'm saying. And since this virtual running community has kept me going like I would never have been able to on my own, I joined a virtual weight loss community. The Daily Plate.com. One of my favorite friend Teresa has lost 46 pounds using it since January. There are forums to chit chat and ask questions on, and a log for everything you eat. You name it, they have it, including store brands. And you can pick your activities to log and based on your weight, they tell you how many calories you burned. So I pulled up running. There isn't just running, you also pick your pace. So look at the description for 10 minute miles (aka, miles I can't run)

Running - 6 mph:
Running at 6 miles per hour is considered by many to be at the low end of the fitness spectrum. A 6-mph running pace is equivalent to running a mile in 10 minutes. At this pace, it would take you over four and a half hours to finish a marathon.

LOW END?!?! Who writes this stuff?? I personally am pretty impressed with anyone that can bust out 10 a minute mile pace. Now I get that that pace isn't going to win any races, but its definitely something to be proud of.

I agree - a 10 min mile isn't on the lower end of my spectrum! Thats crazy. Last year, my long runs were averaging 12-13 min miles. This year, I'm around 10.30 - 11.00, so stick with it, do what you can and remember, you're doing more than the next guy who is sitting watching tv!

Amy, ignore those people who say you are running slow. There are those who think that even 10 minute miles are "slow." Give me a break! We all run at our own pace. You're out there, you're doing it, and that's what is important. I am never going to be a speed demon, either, I just enjoy getting out there, getting more fit, and knowing I can accomplish some goals. Look how far you have come already.

a 10:18 pace will net you a 4:30 marathon.

just sayin'.

Their math may be right (10 minute miles will make it take roughly 4 and a half hours to run a marathon) but their analysis is nothing short of W.R.O.N.G.

That's it, I'm not even checking out Daily Plate. They're off my list. Take that, judgemental people.

that's super lame. i hate those haters. running is running and it's more than 90% of americans do. we should be proud of the progress we're making and that we're OUT THERE!

10 minute pace. Wow.
I am at a 12-14 minute pace and
wanting to finish my first marathon in under 6 hours.
Not all of us are born to run fast
but we can run.

{{{eye roll}} What a stupid thing to put on a website that is supposedly trying to motivate people to lose weight.

I don't know about you, Amy, but I am darn proud that I drag my butt out there and run at all....even at my 12-minute pace. A year ago I couldn't run for 2 minutes. My goal is to run the marathon and stay ahead of the trucks that pick you up if you drop below the 6 hours and 30 minutes cutoff time. Having a pulse at the end would be nice, too.

Just out of curiousity...have you been losing any weight while you've been training? Just wondering because both my husband and I pretty much stopped losing once we started the marathon training.....but we still look better so I guess that's okay. I'm starting back in a full commitment to Weight Watchers Online again tomorrow after about a month off (but I didn't eat junk during that month). The long runs make me so hungry that I've got to keep track of what I'm eating again so I don't go overboard.

Sorry about the lengthy caffeine-induced comment.

It's so hard not to get caught up in the time/pace thing, isn't it? I say kudos to everyone that gets out there and trains and completes a race at whatever finish time!

Hi Amy - I'm an "Amy" too - I found you via Google Reader and was just catching up. I'm going to check out that DailyPlate.com -I'm actually starting on the Smart 4 Life plan Tuesday . . . we shall see. It would be my ultimate GOAL to do a 10 minute mile for over 5 miles. Sheesh.
